Mr. Hui was born into the Ratana faith and is an apostle of the Church.

He commenced with Maori Affairs Department in Kaikohe as a cadet in 1956. After transferring to Whangarei in 1958, other transfers came which saw him taking up new positions and promotions throughout the country serving in 9 of 11 districts including Head Office, Wellington. He retired District Manager of Auckland in 1989. His professional responsibilities were in the areas of Maori land, social and community work and management.

His main interest since his retirement, has been the formation of the Aotearoa Maori Assembly Promotion Society in 1995. The concept is one of procuring administrative self-government of Maori, by Maori, for Maori through the administrative arm of Parliament. It would have 40 members elected by democratic process including a national President.

The concept has been promoted throughout Taitokerau including a 10 week tour nationwide towards the end of last year.

In June, the decision was taken to form a political party to further advance the aims of the Society and the findings of the nationwide tour. The name of the new party is the Piri Wiri Tua Movement which is founded in the philosophies of its founder Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana.

Mr. Hui is the Leader of the party and candidate for the Taitokerau electorate. He and 5 others will contest the Maori seats in this year’s elections.

Mr. Hui has a grown up family.
